How to Choose Ritual Candles: Wax, Color & Scent
A ritual candle begins with what you want to bring to the moment. Perhaps it is a simple flame on the altar, a color chosen for your intention, or a fragrance that helps the room feel familiar. Before choosing, look at the candle’s form, wax, scent, and the way it will be used.
Begin with the form
Tapers stand upright in properly fitted holders. Their slender shape leaves room on the altar for the other objects you choose to keep there. Sculptural candles can be displayed as objects or lit on a heat-resistant tray that catches dripping wax. Container candles hold their wax inside a tin or vessel and still need a stable, heat-safe surface.
The holder is part of the choice. Check the candle’s width against the holder rather than assuming every taper will fit.
Read the wax description
At Cold Moon Candle Co., pure beeswax tapers are made with beeswax rather than a wax blend. Natural golden beeswax may have a subtle honey-like aroma even when no fragrance is added. Soy tapers and beeswax and soy tapers are separate products, with their materials listed individually.
Our scented candles use a coconut and soy wax blend with a wood wick. A natural wax description identifies the wax; it does not, by itself, describe every fragrance or colorant in a candle.
These are different ways of making a candle, rather than a reason to assume one wax guarantees a soot-free flame. Wick care and burning conditions matter, too.
Choose color with intention
A color can carry a meaning from your practice, a personal association, or simply a feeling you want in the space. You can begin with the shade that draws your eye and ask what it means to you.
If you follow a particular tradition, let its teachings guide your choice. Color meanings are not a universal rule, and a candle does not promise a particular result.
Decide whether you want fragrance
Unscented candles let you work without adding fragrance to the room. Our lavender sprig and wildflower tapers are unscented: the flowers are raised designs shaped in wax.
A scented candle offers another layer of atmosphere. Read the fragrance notes before choosing. Pumpkin Thyme brings an herbal thread to autumn spice; All Hallows’ Eve combines sweetness, smoke, and woods. Those descriptions help you choose a fragrance you enjoy without assigning it a guaranteed magical effect.
Make care part of the ritual
Before lighting, follow the care instructions for the candle and its wick. Keep the wax clear of debris, place the candle away from drafts, and keep the flame in sight. Never leave it unattended. Keep candles away from children, pets, and flammable objects.
Give herbs, dried flowers, fabric, and other altar objects plenty of distance from the flame. Botanical designs shaped in wax are different from placing loose dried plants near a burning wick.
A thoughtful place to begin
You do not need every option at once. Start with one candle, a suitable holder or vessel, and a clear understanding of its materials. Let the meaning come from the attention you bring to the moment.
